Fatty liver is a diagnosis usually made on ultrasound scan when there is evidence of excess fat around the liver. It is more common in people who are overweight or obese. Having high levels of fat in your liver is also associated with an increased risk of health problems, such as diabetes, high blood pressure and kidney disease.
Please do not worry about the diagnosis, it is a condition that can be reversed with weight loss. It is important that the condition is monitored by blood tests annually. This should be included on any annual monitoring you already have. We will be sending you a reminder when your monitoring blood test is due.
Please see below for more information on Non-alcoholic fatty liver.
Symptoms of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD): There are not usually any symptoms of NAFLD in the early stages. You probably will not know you have it unless it’s diagnosed during tests carried out for another reason.
Treatment for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD): Most people with NAFLD will not develop any serious problems, but if you’re diagnosed with the condition it’s a good idea to take steps to stop it getting any worse. There’s currently no specific medication for NAFLD, but making healthy lifestyle choices can help. Treatment also may be recommended for associated conditions (high blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol) or complications.
